Limited Preparation

In limited preparation events the speaker gets a set amount of time (varying between events) during the round to pick a topic from a list and come up with a short speech.

Impromptu Speaking: Impromptu is a kind of limited prep. Speakers have a total of 7 minutes to prepare and speak. Impromptu prompts are typically quotations that competitors either support or contradict. When preparing to compete in impromptu speakers focus on learning to interpret prompts quickly and come up with examples they can use in many situations.

Extemporaneous Speaking: In extemp speakers have 30 minutes to prepare for a 5-7 minute long speech. The focus in extemp is on current events, and prompts are typically a question about some current issue. When preparing to compete in extemp speakers typically read the news and stay up to date on current events.
